What Is Internalized Stigma?
Internalized stigma occurs when negative societal beliefs about certain traits, experiences, or identities are absorbed by an individual and turned against themselves.
It may relate to:
🔹 mental health (“I’m weak because I have depression”)
🔹 appearance (“I don’t deserve love because I don’t look perfect”)
🔹 social background
🔹 sexual orientation, gender identity, or life experiences
Internalized stigma is subtle—it often operates in the background, sabotaging our decisions, relationships, and sense of self-worth.
How to Recognize Internalized Stigma
🔸 Excessive self-criticism
🔸 A persistent feeling of “I am inferior”
🔸 Avoiding new challenges due to fear of judgment
🔸 Shame about your emotions or personal history
🔸 Difficulty accepting support or compliments
Owning It — Taking Ownership of the Stigma
“Owning” means consciously acknowledging that these internal beliefs exist, while recognizing that they do not reflect your true worth.
It means taking responsibility for your thoughts and emotions without blaming yourself for their origin.
It is the decision:
“I am not my stigma. I can recognize it, understand it, and change it.”
How to Overcome Internalized Stigma
1. Name your beliefs
Awareness is the first step. What limiting beliefs about yourself are you carrying?
2. Ask questions
Are these beliefs truly yours? Where did they come from? Are they based on facts—or on someone else’s opinions?
3. Practice self-compassion
When self-criticism arises, respond with kindness:
“I’m doing the best I can in this situation.”
4. Seek support
Talking with a therapist, coach, or support group can help break patterns of self-stigmatization.
5. Celebrate your authenticity
Your story, emotions, and experiences are valuable.
You do not have to meet others’ expectations to deserve respect and love—including self-respect.
Summary
Internalized stigma can shape the way we think and act—but it does not have to control us.
By taking ownership of what we carry inside, we open the door to healing, freedom, and living in alignment with who we truly are. 🌿
Your worth is constant, regardless of what the world has told you.
