What to Expect in a Therapy Session?

Your first therapy session is a safe space to be heard, not judged. You’ll share at your own pace, explore your feelings, and learn strategies to cope. Sessions may include conversation, CBT, EMDR, or mindfulness exercises. No need to be “ready”—just show up and start your journey. 🌿

Starting therapy can feel uncertain, and that’s completely normal. Understanding what usually happens in a session can help ease anxiety and prepare you for the process.

First Session – Getting to Know Each Other
The first session is about connection and understanding. You’ll have the chance to share what brings you to therapy, what challenges you’re facing, and what you hope to achieve. You don’t have to reveal everything at once—your pace matters.

Your therapist may ask about your daily life, mood, history of difficulties, and expectations for therapy. This is also your opportunity to ask questions about the therapist’s methods, session structure, or frequency. It’s a collaborative space from the very beginning.

Regular Sessions – Structure and Safety
Most sessions are held weekly and last around 50 minutes. This is your time—without judgment, interruptions, or pressure. You can share emotions, thoughts, doubts, and also learn practical strategies to manage challenges.

Depending on the approach—CBT, EMDR, mindfulness, or other techniques—sessions may include talking, exploring beliefs, practicing mindfulness, or working on emotion regulation exercises. Each session is tailored to your needs.

Do I Need to Be “Ready”?
No. Therapy is not about having all the answers or fully understanding your feelings. Simply showing up with openness and willingness to explore yourself is enough. Growth happens gradually, within a trusting relationship.

Therapy is not an exam or a performance. It’s a safe space to be yourself—even if you’re not sure yet who that is. If you feel ready for support, taking the first step is the most important part.
